Crafts
Hand crafted items played an important role in Transcarpathian life.
People created all their household items and daily necessities by hand and, as a result, were highly skilled craftsmen and artists.
Women traditionally looked after textile arts creating intricate embroidery and weaving.
The men were experts in wood carving and metal work.
The Transcarpathian people developed a unique style of craftsmanship creating pieces that were both practical and artistic.

Embroidery
The embroidery of your shirt or blouse often served as a form of identification telling others what village or region you were from, as well as indicating your wealth and social status.
The embroidery in our exhibit comes from the Vynohradiv Region of Transcarpathia and is characterized by the use of strong and dramatic purples, reds and blues along with intricate geometric and floral patterns.
